Patent statistics is a basic indicator of innovative potential and one of the key indicators of technological development of countries and regions. Comparative analysis of statistical data on patent activity of countries and territories of the world produced by the world intellectual property organization World Intellectual Property Organization specialized Agency of the United Nations intellectual property. The study is conducted annually and uses data from the international, national and regional agencies for the protection of intellectual property. Reports with data on the patent activity of the States is usually delayed for one year as required by international mapping after the publication data national patent services.
This page contains current a periodically updated list of countries sorted by the number of registered patents. The current data are as of 2011 are published in 2012. In 2012, the study covers 103 countries of the measurements were carried out for a larger number of States but some of them are not included in the final rating due to the lack of reliable statistical data.
